phpbb2 email

hi, am setting up a forum on my site, am having a problem when people try to subscribe am not able to send them a confirmation, i tried setting it up to go through my gmail account however it gives me this error message:

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 500 5.5.1 Command unrecognized: "AUTH LOGIN"

has anyone else run into this? does freepgs have an smtp server for this?

You will have to make sure you enable remote login, from gmail.

Also...

Some lame ass spammed from the freepgs server and got it black listed. My mail function for my account was re enabled by the admin.
You can request for your mail function to be enabled from your account.

I've activited the remote login, as i get my emails sent to thunderbird however i think that the problem maybe that phpbb2 doesnt support ssl. Does anyone know of any mods i could use to change this or another way around it. I've just emailed admin about my freepgs email but it never hurts to keep the opitions open
