Support Requests / Plesk5 and Plesk6 End Date
January 04, 2014, 02:28:46 PM
All accounts must be migrated by 9 Jan 2014 (Thursday) from Plesk5 and Plesk6.  Any accounts not migrated by this date will be lost.

We have been sending notices since the beginning of October.

Support Requests / Outdated scripts cannot be tolerated
December 19, 2013, 02:29:10 AM
As a reminder, outdated scripts cannot be tolerated on these accounts, especially if the version you are using is known to have exploits that allow files to be uploaded into your space or if it allows massive amounts of mail to be sent.

If anyone is running a WordPress installation earlier than 3.7.1, you face account suspension.  Please keep all of your scripts up to date!

If there are scripts on your site that you are no longer using, be sure to remove the files from your site.  Keeping old files around that are unused is a great way to get your site hacked (when there is a vulnerability in those old versions that are just sitting there).

When running PHP under FastCGI, remember that these scripts run under your context, so they have access to any file in your account.  Running PHP under Apache Module gives you the previous behavior, however, it is not a replacement to updated scripts, as the script can still access any of your files set to 666/777 in the same manner.

#Part Two

Another problem we face with certain users is using more than their fair share of resources.  This creates a slower service for everyone.  If your site uses more than 30% of the resources (CPU/memory) of any server on an on-going basis, your account faces suspension.  If your site is this popular, you need to think about hosting it on a dedicated server with another provider, not on a shared $10-30 per year hosting service.

We provide this service as a cheap way to get websites online, however, there are some users that always abuse our service.
#43
As a reminder, we have been phasing out the Plesk5 and Plesk6 servers since the beginning of October.  The time has finally come to remove these machines from service.

Once these machines are taken down, we will not have any access to the files on them, so please be sure to request migration to one of the new system AND change the nameservers for your domains to the appropriate servers.

If you are unable to email helpdesk at freepgs dot com for whatever reason, please email plesk at lvcs dot net and provide your username, server name (Plesk5 or Plesk6) and that you would like to migrate your account to one of the new servers.

You can ping the following hosts to determine which server is closest to you.  If you are unable to do this, please tell us your general location and we can pick a server for you.

east.lvcs.net
eu.lvcs.net
lax.lvcs.net
west.lvcs.net

The first 3 allow you to run PHP versions 5.2.17, 5.3.28, 5.4.23, or 5.5.7 on your site.

If there is only a slight difference between lax and west, please choose lax as that machine is running more up-to-date control panel software.

There is no cost for the migration.  Your current plan information is brought forward.  If your account expires at the end of this year, it will still expire at the end of this year after migration.  If your existing account has 3 years remaining, you will still have 3 years remaining after the transfer.

The latest PHP versions are now available on EAST, EU, and LAX servers when using FastCGI.

If you had selected 5.3.27, we have automatically updated your selection to 5.3.28.
If you had selected 5.4.20, we have automatically updated your selection to 5.4.23.
If you had selected 5.5.4, we  have automatically updated your selection to 5.5.7.

If you notice any problems on these servers with these PHP versions, please let us know.

Support Requests / Spam outbreak on EU server
December 13, 2013, 04:24:13 AM
An account's script or mail account was used to send hundreds of thousands of messages to random hotmail addresses.

I'm sure that server will never be able to send to any hotmail/live/microsoft address ever again.

Thank your fellow users that cannot keep their scripts updated for this action.

***We will be scanning for outdated scripts with known vulnerabilities and disabling accounts that haven't updated the scripts.

If you use your own scripts such as contact forms, be sure they cannot be exploited.

If you use ANY script on your website, you MUST keep it up to date.  If you are no longer using a portion of your site that contains scripts, do not leave them as they will become exploited.

Support Requests / Alternate West Server
December 12, 2013, 07:25:56 AM
We are setting up an alternate west server that is running the latest panel version and will allow you to select which PHP version to run.

This server will be known as lax.lvcs.net

It will be open to a limited number of customers (less than 50).

If you are currently on the west server, you can ping this server to see if it responds with better times.

Support Requests / Spam problem on West server
December 11, 2013, 04:37:18 PM
We have a spam problem on the West server.
The provider that machine is hosted with requires you to send all mail through their system.  They also limit you to 1,000 messages per day.  The server has been over capacity all month so far.

We will be clearing the mail queue on that machine.  If this continues, we may need to block the mail function by default on the servers like we used to do.

As a reminder, be sure all of your scripts are kept up to date.  Running outdated scripts is a great way to have your site hacked as well as problems like this (sending messages through an exploit in a script).

Brought new server "LAX2" online to replace the failing LAX
This machine is running the latest release of Plesk 12.0.18 with all updates.
We have also brought a machine "LA2" online that uses cPanel,/CloundLinux but we will continue to monitor LAX2 to see if we should keep it around.
PHP 5.3.29, 5.4.41, 5.5.25, 5.6.9 are available for use on the new LAX2 Plesk server.
Because the Plesk PHP packages are different from our compiled binaries on EAST and EU, additional work is necessary when migrating between these servers.  We hope to eventually upgrade all servers to the latest version of Plesk and/or expand our cPanel offering in the near future.

Further limits were placed in the Postfix config files
A user was contacted that sends email to send in smaller batches in case the limits aren't stopping it.
A few more users were adjusted so the setting "Unknown Address forward to ..." was disabled.

#49
The final days are upon us for users that have not yet migrated from Plesk5 or Plesk6 to one of the new servers.

The apache (web server) service had been started again on these machines at some point, so we emailed the sites that had active visitors at the time we checked stating that migration was required.  We also stopped the services again.

We cannot continue operating the 2 old servers in addition to the new servers for another month.  We have already extended the deadline and have paid for all servers for 2 months (may end up being 3 months) instead of the planned 1 month time period.

As a reminder, these are the active servers going forward.

If your site is on either Plesk5 or Plesk6 and you have not migrated your site within the next few weeks, we will have no way to retrieve your files.

ALSO: We will get around to cleaning up the old servers of accounts that have already been migrated.  If you receive renewal messages listing Plesk5 or Plesk6 and you know you migrated your account to another server, you can send an email to helpdesk at freepgs dot com to have the account removed from the old server.

As a reminder, the Plesk5 and Plesk6 servers are being shutdown within the next few days.

Everyone has been sent multiple messages over the past month and a half regarding this.  If you haven't migrated your site OR pointed your site to the new nameservers, your sites will stop functioning once these servers are taken offline.

Once the servers are shut down and removed from service, we will no longer have access to your files.  It is important that everyone either migrates their site or has a copy of their files before the servers are shut down.

Support Requests / Spam Problem on East server
November 18, 2013, 04:59:15 PM
I guess we made a mistake to continue running this service.

There is a spam problem on the new server (East).  This could be the result of outdated scripts which many of you seem to have on your sites.

The new servers are set to default allow the mail() function, but this may have to change.

We are not going to be able to continue offering service for those running outdated scripts such as WordPress or Joomla.  Outdated WordPress versions allow files to be replaced on your site for example.

Due to the continued number of complaints we are seeing, we are seriously reconsidering our effort to keep this service running.

For those that have already paid, we will keep your service running or offer a refund of the unused service amount if this service does need to be shut down.

No decision has been made to shut the service down, but this may end up being the result.

Also, we are going to be turning off the Plesk5 and Plesk6 servers very soon.  If you haven't migrated your sites and/or pointed your domains to the correct nameservers, your sites will stop working.

After removing those servers from service, we will start looking through sites that are still running outdated scripts and handle those accordingly.

As a reminder, migration is required from the Plesk5 and Plesk6 servers.  You must open a support ticket and tell us which server is closest to you so we can get your files migrated before they are all gone.

Also, if you have already requested migration and received the completed message, be sure you have updated the nameservers for your domain.  If you have not done so, your domain is not pointing to the correct server and will stop working when the server goes down.

A new helpdesk ticket system was installed for FreePgs users.

You can send a new email to helpdesk at freepgs dot com with your issue and a ticket will be created for you.
You can also submit tickets via http://www.freepgs.com/support/

If you received old ticket notifications, that is because of old replies that were in the helpdesk@ account that hasn't been used for a while.

Support Requests / Account Cleanup in Progress
September 29, 2013, 07:38:29 PM
We are currently cleaning up all expired accounts from Plesk5 and Plesk6 servers due to the necessary server migration.

Just a reminder to all users:
Be sure you keep any CMS/forum/blog scripts up-to-date to avoid files being injected into your sites.

Our new servers offer PHP 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4 so all scripts should be compatible.  Eventually, we will be removing 5.2 support since that is past its end of life by the PHP group.

The annual fee for all accounts is $10 per year.

This entitles you to at least 1 GB disk space.  If your account doesn't allow 1GB, please contact us.

The cost is the same for all regions we serve.

*The following servers are being depreciated
EAST
LAX2
WEST
WEST1

The "EU" Plesk server will eventually be depreciated as well, but this machine is running fairly well at the current time.

cPanel servers point to our cPanel DNS cluster servers which operate in Los Angeles and New Jersey for better DNS uptime and reachability.  As we expand our cPanel offerings into other regions, we may add another DNS server somewhere in the EU.

We now have space in the 100 William St datacenter in Lower Manhattan so we may start offering more services from that location as well.

As we migrate your account to our new cPanel offering, you should also receive an account on our WHMCS installation at https://hosting.lvcs.net/.  From here you can manage your details, make payments, and request support.  You can also single sign-in to your cPanel account.  This change gives us a single user interface that users can interact with.  While the transition may be bumpy, things will be much easier to manage once everything is swapped over.
